In this site, I will share course materials I have developed related to environmental geology, the methods hydrologists use to evaluate water flow and chemistry, and using Python to assess environmental data.
My focus is hydrogeology. Hydrogeologists evaluate the flow of water through geologic materials and the chemistry of water found in the subsurface. Groundwater cannot usually be observed and wells are used to collect water samples and measure the hydraulic head (a measure of energy) in geologic materials. In addition to data collection utilizing monitoring wells, hydrogeologists also evaluate groundwater systems using other tools including: computer models, laboratory-based experiment, and geophysical measurements to indirectly evaluate groundwater systems. The water sciences increasingly involves the interpretation of large data sets, driven by the use of new data-logging sensors, satellite and other spatial information, and the use of computer models that all create large amounts of data.
